One Sunday afternoon of November 1991, I showed up for my first-ever hash in Brussels. Invited by a Scottish colleague well known for being a party animal, I had no clue what I was about to get into. He had
mentioned some running and "you'll see for the rest". My first down-down was
for front running (obviously a while ago) and I found immediately that fun and non-PC atmosphere I had been used to during my recent university time. First time also I experienced a Monday morning hangover after a serious session at One Way Dick's residence ending up at 2 am.
On my third hash, BMPH3 "naming committee" picked up 4 new boots who had the misfortune of looking like some "famous" people, mine being Higgins, the butler from Magnum P.I. At that time, it would have been more appropriate to go for 'iggins as my oral command of English was, errr, very French.
Initially starting on BMPH3 mismanagement as Hash Beer II a mere 6 months after joining the hash, I assumed all positions (besides Hash Cash) over the years up to the GM-ship. In between, I started a European hashing newsletter in the pre-internet days before convincing Brussels hashers it would be fun to host EuroHash (the fools). So we did in July 1997 and managed to please 666 visiting hashers, over a stretching 14 days for those who decided to put their liver on test and ended up on the original Bus Tour from HHHell.
Never afraid of a piss-up too big, I managed to give a hand on the organizing committee of Cardiff 2004 InterHash while also getting the Bus Tour from HHHell 2 rocking from Prague to Amsterdam.
Future plans involve thinking about Brussels for InterHash 2014 while sampling many different beers in between!
Do I have a life? Of course! A hashing life, that is ;-) OK, OK, I also have to spend 40 hours a week collecting money for sponsoring my lifestyle so working it out as program manager in the telecom industry.
Instead of counting beans, being the obsessive organiser I can be, I maintain a spreadsheet to track my 1050 runs (442 as visitor) with 187 chapters through 45 countries so far.
Life in the hashing world has been good for the first 15 years so I hope to get older on trail but hopefully never grow up :-))
On Out,
