Lyrics, just another way to tell a story.

Wow, what a strange week I had last week. I spent four days in D.C. and was able to hash every night. One night I sang a Smoking Wiener original and was surprised when the hash started singing new lyrics and verses. I've got to say that I was impressed and amazed. The fact that a hash had bothered to learn a song that I'd altered from a rugby song, and had added additional lyrics to it, was an unusual experience. Although it did suffer from the children's game of grapevine.

The original lyrics had changed from "Jesus can't lay hash trail" to "Jesus can't go hashing". Not, in all, a bad change. What amazed me the most is that the original verses were altered. For example, "Jesus can't lay hash trail 'cause the flour sifts through his hands" was butchered.

At the Everyday is Wednesday Hash they didn't seem to believe that I'd originated the hash version of the rugby song while at ECH3 several years ago. I recall vividly that the wife of MuSick refused to sing the song. Anyway, I sang a few new verses for the D.C. hash and they seemed to enjoy them. The most recent verse is "Jesus can't lay hash trail 'cause he lays his checks in air", this is sung while making the sign of the cross in the air with your hand opened perpendicular to your body (like the catholic priests do).

The more I travel and visit other hashes, the more I discover how different each hash is. Embrace those differences. Enjoy each hash (and hash song) for what it is.
