The Harriettes of Teign Valley
Take it off for Charity

Prostate cancer has become the second largest cancer in men. Every year, 27,000 cases are diagnosed in the UK. For “Wickdipper”, a harriette in the Teign Valley Hash House Harriers, this was much more than a dry statistic. The disease had claimed her father’s life in 2002.

After watching the 2003 film Calendar Girls starring Helen Mirren, Wickdipper was inspired to borrow the idea of producing a calendar to raise money and awareness of this awful disease.

The Teign Valley girls all got together and decided it was a fantastic idea. Palmolive, Hornie, Bottleneck, Flasher, Honeydew, Two Scoops, Hi de Hi, Able Semen, Soapy and of course Wickdipper agreed to pose.

Although a lot of other people had made a calendar of this kind, the TVH3’s 2005 calendar will be a little bit different. Each harriette posing for the calendar would be photographed using a scenic backdrop befitting their hash name while wearing a pair of running trainers – and little else!

The Prostate Cancer Charity, an organisation dedicated to research and treatment of the disease, were contacted and despite the unconventional nature of the calendar, the TVH3 were given the go ahead for the project. All proceeds will help the Prostate Cancer Charity continue research, and to extend its lifeline to sufferers and their families with a helpline, newsletters and information packs.

Hornie (February’s harriette) did a few pencil sketches to thrash a few ideas about. Able Semen would look great naked in a boat. Soapy would look lovely all lathered up in a nice bath tub with local scenery. A few group photos were also sketched.

During the early part of the project and unsure of how to go about such a task, Pork Torpedo (Hornie’s husband) decided to play about in their garden with his digital … er … camera! His photo snapshots seen here give a taster [Editor’s note: sampling, surely!] of the quality to expect in the calendar.

Guess which harriette is Hornie and which is Honeydew!

Doing the final pictures, all the girls were very excited [Editor’s note: enthusiastic, surely?] but a few were apprehensive about baring all in front of the camera even though Pork Torpedo had seen most of it all before during various hash events. The locations were chosen for their picturesque qualities and also their remoteness from all prying eyes – with the exception of those belonging to Pork Torpedo. Leave it to hashers to schedule the photo shoot on the one day in January that hailed on Dartmoor. But even this couldn’t dampen their spirits.
